Google Meet Expands Small Group Room Availability and Brings Improvements

Google Meet is expanding the availability of meeting rooms and bringing improvements to the function. Meeting rooms will now be available to customers with Google Workspace plans. Meeting moderators can set timers for group sessions, dial-up participants can be assigned to rooms, and participants can request assistance. The meeting rooms feature, which allows moderators to divide participants into smaller groups during video calls, was released last month, but was limited to G Suite Enterprise for Education customers. It is now available to all eligible users.

With break rooms in Google Meet Educators with G Suite Enterprise for Education plans could divide students for simultaneous small group discussions or work time to increase engagement. Moderators have the ability to monitor and participate in these discussions.

Google Announced that users with Work space The Essentials, Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Standard, and Enterprise Plus plans will also have meeting rooms as a feature now, alongside G Suite Business and Enterprise for Education customers.

Participants in Google Meet meeting rooms can ask the moderators for help, if necessary. The moderator can view the request from the moderator panel and join the meeting room as well.

Meeting moderators can also set a timer for a group session. Participants will be able to see a banner to keep track of how much time they have left and will also receive an alert when 30 seconds remain. When the time is up, participants will be asked to return to the main Google Meet video meeting.

Dial-up phone participants can now also be assigned to small group rooms. Google He also revealed that in two weeks, there will be an option to add anonymous users to group rooms.

Up to 100 meeting rooms can be created in one Google Meet call. Participants are randomly and evenly distributed across rooms, but meeting presenters can also manually move people to different rooms.

The group rooms feature is not yet available for customers with the following plans: Workspace Business Starter, G Suite Basic, Education, and Nonprofits.
