Applying for a passport online in India requires one to register on the Passport Seva portal and follow a few simple steps. The online experience is perfect, although you will need to physically visit the Passport Seva Kendra or a regional passport office to complete the process after scheduling an appointment online. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has provided a dedicated online service called Passport Seva that allows citizens to apply for a passport online. It reduces the time you will need to spend at the passport office and makes the whole process much more convenient.

How to apply for a passport online in India
Before starting the process of applying for an online passport in India, it is worth noting that you will need to keep your original documents ready to take with you while visiting a Passport Seva Kendra or Regional Passport Office for your appointment. The list of required documents to apply for a passport is available online. After applying for a passport online, you will have 90 days to visit a Seva Kendra Passport, if not, you will have to resubmit your application online. Here are the steps to apply for a passport online.
- Visit the Passport Seva portal and click on the Register now link.
Enter your details accurately and select the passport office you would like to visit.
Once the details are entered, type the Captcha characters and then click the Register button.
Now, log in to the Passport Seva portal with your registered login ID.
Click on the Apply for a new passport / passport reissue Link. It is important to note that when applying in the recent issue category, you must never have had an Indian passport in the past. Otherwise, you must apply in the Reissue category.
Fill in the required details in the form that appears on the screen and click Send.
Now click on the Pay and schedule an appointment on the View Saved / Sent Applications screen. This will allow you to schedule your appointment. You must also pay an online fee for your appointment.
Click on the Print application receipt link to print your application receipt.
You will receive an SMS message with the details of your appointment.
Now, you just have to visit the Passport Seva Kendra or the Regional Passport Office where the appointment has been booked. Be sure to bring your original documents along with the application receipt. It is not mandatory to bring the physical application receipt if you can display the SMS message you received on your phone after taking the online appointment.
Note that the government has also made it mandatory for applicants visiting a passport office to follow COVID-19 protocols. Applicants are encouraged to wear a mask, bring a disinfectant, download and install the Aarogya Setu app, and follow social distancing rules during their visit.
