How to check the battery life of an AirTag and replace the existing battery

AirTag is claimed to offer more than a year of battery life with daily use. But that doesn’t mean that Apple hasn’t provided an option to keep an eye on your AirTag’s battery life. Your Apple device will notify you with a notification when your AirTag’s battery is running low to allow you to arrange a replacement. Plus, there is an easy way to replace the existing battery in your AirTag. Apple’s AirTag carries a user-replaceable CR2032 battery and is widely available at nearby online or offline stores.

But before you buy a new battery for your AirTag, you should check the status of the existing one as a company claim to offer a good amount of use that should last for a year.

How to check AirTag battery life

Before starting with the steps to check the battery life of your AirTag, it is important to note that the device must be connected to the Find my app. Your Apple device, which can be an iPhone, iPad or Mac, must also be connected to Wi-Fi or cellular internet to provide accurate details. If both of these conditions are met, you can continue with the steps below.

Step 1: Open the Find My app on your Apple device.

Step 2: Now, tap on the name of your AirTag. You will see the battery status right after the AirTag name and location.

Apple does not offer the option to view the exact percentage of battery remaining in your AirTag. However, the battery status available through the Find My app is good enough to suggest when you’ll need replacement.

How to Replace the AirTag Battery

You can replace the battery in your AirTag in just a few steps. Before beginning the replacement process, make sure you have removed the AirTag from the accessory or case to which it is attached.

Step 1: Hold the AirTag with the stainless steel battery cover facing you.

Step 2: Press the cap down and turn it counterclockwise until it stops turning.

Step 3: Release your fingers. The battery cover will now open.

Step 4: Pull the cover, remove the battery, and then insert a new one with the positive side of the battery facing you.

Step 5: Once the battery is properly seated, replace the cover by aligning the three tabs on the cover with the available slots on your AirTag and press down with a little pressure.

Step 6: The AirTag will now play a song to indicate that the new battery is connected.

Step 7: Turn the cap clockwise until it stops.

Please keep the original battery out of the reach of children and dispose of it properly.
