MacOS Big Sur update is now available: how to get it
macOS Big Sur is out now. The new macOS update, which is the largest of 2020, brings a host of new features to Mac machines. It comes with an updated menu bar that is more translucent than ever and provides a wider viewing area. You’ll also get full-height sidebars, a redesigned Dock with updated application icons, and an updated Control Center. All of these changes make macOS 11 Big Sur a major update over previous versions of macOS. Additionally, the macOS Big Sur update includes updates for the preloaded Messages, Maps, and Safari apps. Apple has also provided specific enhancements to the M1 chip.
MacOS Big Sur Features
Announced to WWDC 2020 in June, macOS Big Sur is now available for download and it brings the updated menu bar that stretches your desktop image from edge to edge and comes with the ability to hide buttons and controls when not in use. There’s also the redesigned Dock that puts more emphasis on the desktop background by adding more transparency. The Dock also includes symmetrical application icons. Additionally, the macOS 11 Big Sur update brings the new Control Center with customizations and an updated Notification Center with redesigned notifications.
In addition to the new changes at the interface level, macOS Big Sur comes with the update Safari browser that offers not only extensive customization with a customizable home page and iCloud tabs, but also improves performance with support for WebExtensions API and optimized power consumption.
The pre-installed Messages app on macOS Big Sur also includes features like pin conversations, group photos, and improved search functionality. Apple has also improved Maps with a redesigned interface and features that include curated guides and indoor maps.
macOS 11 Big Sur also set the playing field for Apple’s silicon that was introduced earlier this week and will hit the market via the new MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini next week. It comes with universal application support for ARM architecture-based applications, as well as includes Rosetta 2 translation technology for traditional Intel x86-compatible applications.
