The macOS Big Sur implementation seems to cause sudden slowdowns for Mac users
MacOS 11 Big Sur downloads appear to have been marred by slowdown issues. Shortly after Apple released macOS 11 Big Sur, a large number of Mac users reported problems downloading the latest update today. Several users began to see a delay of more than fifteen days in downloading macOS Big Sur on their machines. In some other cases, Mac users on an existing version of macOS reported unexpected issues and application launch delays. Those issues affected users of macOS 10.15 Catalina and even macOS 10.14 Mojave. Apple’s major services, including Apple Pay and iMessage, also faced slowdowns and disruptions in global regions.
The sudden rush to download macOS Big Sur appears to have caused Apple’s Online Certificate Status Protocol (OCSP) service to crash. That apparently caused system-wide slowdowns on Mac machines and affected the launch of applications even on existing versions of macOS. The problems lasted for several minutes as the OCSP service was unable to establish a connection with Mac devices as reported by ArsTechnica.
“My MacBook slows down when Wi-Fi is enabled,” said one of the affected users wrote on the MacRumors forum. “I’m not talking about internet speed, that’s fine. But just starting or using applications becomes extremely slow. ”
Users found that temporarily disabling internet connectivity acted as a workaround to resolve app slowdown issues. However, Apple took some time to fix the issues from the backend.
Some users trying to download macOS Big Sur too reported massive delays.
According to him details available On Apple’s System Status site, the issues affected iMessage and FaceTime along with the macOS software update service. The site also shows that Apple Maps also faced a couple of outages. Additionally, some users reported problems accessing Apple Card and Apple Pay, as well as Apple’s developer site.
Apple identified the issues around 1:30 a.m. IST and resolved most of them within a couple of hours, according to the System Status site. However, the issues that affected the macOS Big Sur update took some time and were finally addressed at 6:45 am IST.
The exact cause of the problems is not yet clear. However, the problems appear to have largely resolved by now.
