WhatsApp Disappearing Messages FAQ Available Now: How Will It Work?

Disappearing WhatsApp messages will soon be released to users, judging from a recently posted FAQ page. The new feature, which was initially spotted in October last year, will allow users to make their messages disappear from chats after seven days. WhatsApp will bring messages that disappear both in individual chats and in group conversations. However, the function will not work for forwarded messages. WhatsApp will also not prevent users from copying and saving the content of disappearing messages.

The details available on the FAQ page, which were first seen by WhatsApp The beta tracker WABetaInfo shows that WhatsApp’s disappearing messages feature will be limited to a seven-day period. Users will not have the option to customize the interval for messages to disappear from their end, unlike competing services like Telegram. It is also different from the initial version of the function that emerged last year in a public beta of WhatsApp for Android. That version had specific time intervals to make a particular message disappear.

WhatsApp has noted that the new feature will not affect messages that you previously sent or received in the instant messaging application. Also, in case a user does not open WhatsApp within the seven day period, the preview of the disappearing message may also be displayed in the notifications until the application is opened. However, the message will not be available in the chat.

Although WhatsApp aims to add self-destruction with the disappearing messages feature, it will still cause a disappearing message to appear in the case of forwarded chats. “If a disappearing message is forwarded to a chat with the disappearing messages, the message will not disappear in the forwarded chat,” the company said on the FAQ page.

WhatsApp also mentioned that disappearing messages will be part of your backups. However, those messages will be deleted when a user restores from a backup.

When you send a message that disappears, the recipient can forward it or take a screenshot of those messages, or even copy or save their content before it disappears. Therefore, WhatsApp has recommended users to use the disappearing messages feature only with trusted people. The FAQ also noted that if the disappear option is enabled, the media sent in a chat thread will disappear. Is something that was seen in detail last month. However, the recipient could save the media content on their phone if automatic download is enabled.

In addition to the FAQ page detailing the disappearing messages, WhatsApp has created some dedicated pages on its site that provide step-by-step instructions on how to enable the new feature in Android, iPhone and KaiOS as much as Web and desktop for both individual messages and group chats. However, it is not yet available to users.

How to enable or disable disappearing messages on WhatsApp

Once the feature is rolled out to users, you can enable or disable disappearing messages using the following steps:

  1. Open WhatsApp chat, and then tap on the name of the contact for whom you want to turn the disappearing messages feature on or off.
  2. Now, touch the Disappearing messages option.
  3. If prompted, touch Follow.
  4. Select On / Off as required.

To activate or deactivate the function in a group chat, the steps are the same, but instead of touching the name of the contact, you would be touching the name of the group.

Gadgets 360 has reached out to WhatsApp to clarify the launch of the disappearing messages feature and will update this space when the company responds.

Competing messaging apps, including Telegram and Signal have a messaging option that disappears for quite some time. They also allow users to decide when their messages should disappear, something different from WhatsApp. At the end of last month, the father of WhatsApp Facebook also updated his Delivery courier application with an escape mode which would allow users to make their messages disappear after a certain time.
